Product Test: Kiwi Heavy Duty water Repellant & Performance Fabric Protector

Anne, AWB's outdoor contributor, has given two Kiwi products a test drive to see if they really can make your clothing water repellant. Following a lengthy trial period and some time in the shower, she reports that Kiwi exceeded her expectations.  Here are her comments:

Several months ago the Kiwi Camp Dry Company sent me two products to review for Adventurous Women. I received Heavy Duty Water Repellant and Performance Fabric Protector.  The water repellant is for any product that you would like to have repel water.  The Performance Fabric Protector is to extend the life of a performance fabric.

A little background, I live in Western Montana. It’s a dry climate here for most of the year. We get about 12 inches of precipitation in a normal year. I wanted to give the product a thorough test, but I didn’t want to rely on the results to keep me from getting hypothermia.  I remember using camp dry about 40 years ago when I first started skiing.  We used to spray our jeans with it before we set off for a day on the slopes.  Yes, we used to ski in jeans, and our long underwear was cotton.  Nowadays, “cotton kills” is a common saying among outdoorspeople.  Anyway, the Camp Dry would keep our jeans semi water repellant until about noon, and then we’d be drenched. Strangely, my twelve-year-old self thought this was fine—at 51, it doesn’t sound so good.

Back to my test. First, I selected the clothes I wanted to test. I have an old jacket that used to be water resistant and a newer pair of powder pants.  I carefully read the instructions because of the cautionary language on the can.  It’s a good thing I don’t live in California because they know that “the product contains a chemical known by the State of California to cause cancer,” but since I live in Montana, I didn’t have to worry.  Anyway, I needed to use it in a well-ventilated area, and then let it dry for at least 24 hours.  I let it dry in the garage for about two months.

I decided to conduct the test while I cleaned the shower.  I put on the pants and jacket and turned on the shower water. The force from the shower is harder than rainfall.  It wasn’t a completely fair test, but I didn’t want to risk getting really wet while I was out on the trail and miles away from home. Anyway, the Camp Dry preformed better than I really expected. The jacket was repellant at first, but it gave out quickly since it felt the full force of the shower spray. On the other hand, my pants kept me quite dry.  I have gotten wet biking in these pants before, but with the Camp Dry they were a good water barrier.

So, I give the product 3 out of 5 stars.  I’ll use it again. I need a pair of rain pants, but I don’t want to buy a pair for the five times a year that I need them.  It will work well when I’m caught in the rain on my bike or out on a hike.

52 Weeks

Exactly one year ago today, my life took an unexpected turn. Actually, I meant to turn, it was the guy who ran the red light and smashed into my van that was unexpected. From that moment until today, I've had more life changing experiences that I can count on one hand. Now, 52 weeks after the death of my car, I've just returned from Puerto Rico's gorgeous rain forest, which is nothing if not life affirming. This year long journey has shown me that the meaning of my life is just to enjoy each little moment as it appears.

So, that said, I think the time is right to rejoin the blogosphere and have a little fun in cyberspace.

See you soon!

Gone Fishin'

Dear Adventurous Women,

Thanks so much for reading Adventurous Women Blog. Since starting this project, I've had the good fortune to "meet" many of you and have made a lot of wonderful new cyber-friends. I've also thoroughly enjoyed seeking out interesting, new or weird activities to share on this space. The possibilities, of course, are endless but recently other parts of my life have filled all my free time and I'm afraid blogging is going to have to take a back seat...for awhile.

Adventurous Women Blog will remain on the Web so I hope you'll continue to use the resources on the right side of the page. There are lots of links and ideas for Adventure Clubs and individuals alike and I'll try to make sure they stay current. Thanks again for clicking in!

Happy trails!

Book Giveaway: "The Atlantis Revelation"

Thanks to Simon and Schuster, I have a preview copy of Thomas Greanias' The Atlantis Revelation to give away. Whether you're interested in the film contest or not, if you want to be the first on your block to get your hands on Greanias' latest novel, you'll want to enter this book giveaway.

Greanias is a NY Times bestselling author and The Atlantis Revelation is the fourth in his Atlantis series. I'm about halfway through Revelation and I'll describe it as National Treasure meets classic James Bond (not the Daniel Craig variety). It's a fast-paced, adventure thriller, with lots of international intrigue, jet setting and high stakes.

The Atlantis Revelation doesn't go on sale until August 11, so this book is fresh off the press. If you'd like to have it for your very own, just leave a comment on this post and I'll draw a name out of a hat and announce the winner next Friday.

BTW, you can download a free copy of Greanias' first Atlantis novel and have a chance to win an iPod Touch at the Thomas Greanias website. Click here.

Film Makers Wanted: Contest to promote new book

Thomas Greanias has written the fourth book in his Atlantis action adventure series and he's got some great promotional ideas that could spell adventure for YOU. The Atlantis Revelation won't be available until August 11, but Greanias isn't waiting for the launch date, he's looking for film makers or would-be film makers to create a "movie trailer" right now. This is where you come in.

This contest was officially unveiled at Comic-Con on Saturday. While, *sigh*, I missed that shindig again this year, Simon and Schuster were nice enough to give me some early warning AND a free preview copy of Atlantis Revelation for one of you wonderful readers (see the next post).

Here are the details of the Movie Trailer Mashup Contest:

First, the contest officially begins August 11, 2009.

Second, visit Greanias' Web site for complete rules and downloadable elements. Click here.

Third, you're required to include a live video shot of the hardcover book and a shot of the cover art. You can get these from Greanias's site or get your own copy of the book from ME! (See the next post.)

Prize: The winner will receive a FlipVideo HD camera and a Hollywood critique by producer Ed Newmeyer (Robocop, Starship Troopers) and video game Creator Flint Dille (Fantastic Four, Transformers).

The winning trailer will be revealed when it airs on CBS.com

GOOD LUCK!!

Happy Julio Day (Jul10)

My sister, who has had a weird fascination with Mario Day (Mar10) since we were kids, is branching out. Instead of just celebrating Mar 10 because it looks like the name "Mario" when squeezed together, she's also inviting everyone to be excited about today. July 10, is Jul10 Day.

I'm gonna guess that there aren't any parties happening in your neighborhood but that is a good reason for you to throw one. Get drinks and snacks and invite all the Julios you know over for a beer. If you don't know any Julios, have a party anyway!

"National Geographic Adventure" Needs Your Getaway Ideas

This interesting bit came to me this morning. National Geographic Adventure magazine is looking for fabulous ideas for weekend getaways. They want specific information about novel places, unusual hikes, and out-of-the way destinations. If you have an adventure that you'd like to share, here's what you need to know:

Email: bob@howells.com

Title: Editor at Large

Deadline: 12:07pm PACIFIC - 10 July

I have an ongoing need for specific, detailed tips about adventurous outdoor weekend getaways. I'm looking for savvy angles: off-the- radar places and ways to experience them. These can be outfitted trips, lodge-based activities, or DIY adventures. Beauty and physical activity are paramount. Generalities like "There's lots of hiking in the Rockies" are worthless. Tell me what trail, where, why, how long, what we'll see, feel...

Lead time is five months. Immediate need is for November, but I keep all good leads on file. I write 16 of these per issue, so I rely on local expertise. Tips from the Midwest and South are especially welcome.

Region: U.S. and southern Canada

Remember to: Please put "Next Weekend" in the subject line.

Happy Earth Day!

I have spent the better part of the last week doing the most un-Earth Day thing possible -- working at a trade show in Las Vegas. Yes, it was an adventure but one I will save for next week.

On a more appropriate note, I hope you'll click in on Friday when I'll have a Q&A with Park Ranger Gaelyn Olmsted. After being a wife, mom and business owner, Gaelyn chose to completely re-invent herself and has been living an amazingly nomadic life ever since. Her seasonal position allows Gaelyn to spend six months in a national park and six months in her camper going wherever the road leads her. I think you'll enjoy reading about Gaelyn and her travels and as a bonus, the Geogypsy will reveal where she'll be working this summer. Hey, Gaelyn! Wanna swap places?
